Just 0.048s separated Haltech V8 SuperUtes Series leader Aaron Borg and the retiring Craig Dontas at the end of a frantic qualifying session at Bathurst.
Borg continued his pacesetting performance from practice earlier as the conditions significantly improved to set-up a thrilling fight for pole.
The ACDelco Holden Colorado of Borg achieved a 2m 32.230s and withstood a final lap dash after Rohan Barry collided with wall across the top of the Mountain in the Abcor Racing Toyota Hilux. A red flag came out as barry recovered to the lane as it left just four-minutes on the clock to set a time.
As it turned out, it proved to be a great battle as the Ryco 24.7 Racing Mitsubishi Triton of Dontas just missed pole by 0.048s, with Craig Woods making three manufacturers represented in the top three as he was just 0.884s in arrears of Borg in the Western Sydney Motorsport Toyota Hilux.
David Sieders will line-up alongside Woods on the second row in the Sieders Racing Team Mitsubishi Triton, just edging Borg’s chief title rival Go Sunny Solar’s George Gutierrez in a Holden Colorado.
Ben Walsh is sixth for Fat Freddy’s Lager, driving the second Western Sydney Motorsport Hilux ahead of veteran Richard Mork’s City Rural Insurance Brokers Mazda BT-50, World’s Best Technology’s Jaidan Maggs in a Triton, Barry and Ellexandra Best in the Best Leisure Industries Mitsubishi.
Dave Casey will have work to do in the Bendix Racing Isuzu D-Max in 11th from Dean Brooking’s Gates JKD Racing Team Hilux and Craig Jenner in his BT-50.
The Haltech V8 SuperUtes Series begins its Mountain campaign tomorrow at 8:50am for Race 1.
